Thank you for showing an interest in Neighbourhood Watch and taking on the responsibility in your road.

Portsmouth Neighbourhood Watch is a self-help scheme which tries to deter crime, encourage community spirit and improve Police and public communications. It will not stop crime but is a powerful deterrent.

We can all deter crime by better house security, Neighbourhood Watch road sign, window stickers and general vigilance resulting in making our property a harder target.

Ask you insurance company if they give house content discounts once you become a Neighbourhood Watch area.

We visit the office at least once a week, if you have any queries please:
bulletGive us a ring on our answer phone, number 07847 938 824;
bulletE-mail us at pompeynwa@hotmail.com; or
bulletWrite to:
Neighbourhood Watch Office
  Third Floor,
    The Guildhall,
      Guildhall Square,
        Portsmouth,
          PO1 2AL

and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We work voluntarily so do not expect us to reply straight away.

If you wish to start a Watch we would send you the following Microsoft Word documents:
bullet

Welcome letter and

bullet

Leaflet on the Portsmouth Neighbourhood Watch;

To join the Association as a Neighbourhood Watch please contact your local police station or ring the police on 101.  A PCSO will visit you very shortly afterwards to ask you for some identification and a few details so that they can run a security check and we have enough details so we can contact you later.  Once the Police completed the security checked we will send you some crime leaflets and a window sticker for all your residents.

It is up to you and your Members if you have a road sign, if you decide to have a sign you have to order, pay and erect it yourselves. Click here to find out how. You do not pay for anything else.

To help you I will give an overview of the organisations responsibilities.

Representatives Responsibilities

bulletAct as a central point for your Watch area between the Portsmouth Neighbourhood Watch Association and the residents.
bulletCollect and distribute the News letter' and Crime Reports to residence.
bulletDistribute crime leaflets (Resource Packs) to residence. PNWA provide these.
bulletOrganise the purchase and erection of the NW signs, if you want one.
bulletAttend the yearly AGM.
bulletIt is the responsibility of each Watch to pursue the level of Community spirit they feel is right for themselves and residents. You could do very little or as one Watch in Southsea, the 15 residents have regular meetings, one every four months over a cup of tea and alternate the meetings between 6 houses.
bulletIt is up to you what size Watch you have, there are some with one person and others with over 300 residents (take into consideration how long this would take you if you deliver the Newsletter to each house and if you intend having meetings, how many people can you get into your living room). At the meetings set an agenda that takes no longer than half an hour so that everyone can chat and get to know each other.
